Rebecca “Becca” Johnson passed away at the age of 62. Becca is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jane (Treganza) Ronayne and Robert E. Moore. She is survived by her son Michael Kennedy, daughter-in-law Shannon Kennedy, stepdaughter Peyton Johnson, stepson Cole Carlozo (spouse, Tyler Carlozo), and former husband Frank Johnson.
Becca spent her early years in Alexandria, VA. As a child, she enjoyed her “cowgirl summers” in Montana, where she was nicknamed “Virginia Slim.” Becca spent her formative years in Aberdeen, SD, before going to college at Moorhead State University (now known as Minnesota State University Moorhead). After college, she moved to Minneapolis prior to settling in the Wilmington, DE area.
Becca lit up any room she walked into with her smile, her laugh, and her personality. She cared so deeply for anyone who crossed paths with her, even if this was just briefly. She always offered a helping hand and never expected anything to be given in return. Becca was someone you would meet and never forget.
Becca enjoyed long bike rides, kayaking, and attending concerts near and far. Becca was an accomplished clarinet player and enjoyed playing her baby grand piano. She had a love for animals, but nothing came quite as close to her love for dogs. You couldn’t know Becca without knowing her dogs, Nola and Meli. Becca loved taking pictures of everything, from sunsets to family to friends, and of course, her silly pictures of Nola and Meli.
Becca began her career in the corporate world but found her true calling working in the nonprofit industry. Becca always wanted to help those in need, and she was passionate about helping underserved communities. She left an indelible mark while working at the nonprofit Tech Impact for over a decade. For the last four years, Becca was the Development Director at the nonprofit The Challenge Program (“TCP”). More importantly, she was truly part of the TCP family. Becca created their biggest fundraiser, the annual gala “Tasting Under the Timbers,” which has been integral to TCP’s growth and success. In the words of TCP’s Executive Director, “Without Becca, there would be no gala.” Becca’s passion also led her to join the board of Project New Start, another nonprofit helping those in need. She worked tirelessly on every project she was a part of and strived to feel proud of the work she had accomplished.
Becca was a light in so many people’s lives. She added such happiness to those around her. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you honor Becca’s spirit by donating to The Challenge Program (https://secure.qgiv.com/for/thechallengeprogram/).
