Born on March 15, 1945, in Trenton, NJ, at St. Francis Hospital, Joan was the beloved daughter of Anthony and Anna Petito. She graduated from Villa Victoria Academy in Ewing, NJ, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky.
Joan began her teaching career as a second-grade teacher at Robinson Elementary School in Hamilton, NJ. After moving with her family to Wilmington, DE, she returned to the classroom once her children were older, teaching second grade at St. Anthony of Padua Grade School. Joan absolutely loved her students, always nurturing them with kindness, patience, and encouragement. Teaching was more than a profession to her—it was a true calling, and she cherished every child she taught.
A longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Joan was also a volunteer for the American Diabetes Association. She found joy in spending time with family and friends at the beach, celebrating the holidays, and challenging herself with Sudoku puzzles.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, Leonard Dibbs of Wilmington, DE; her son, Matthew Dibbs of Holland, PA; her daughter, Melissa Dibbs of Miami Beach, FL; her adored granddaughter, Naya of Miami Beach, FL and her sister, Lee Petito of Chesterfield, NJ. She was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Anna Petito; her sister, Marie; and her brothers, Ralph, Dominic and Anthony.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 4, from 10 to 11:30 am at the St. Helena RC Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Joan’s life at 11:30 am. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s honor may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Grade School, 1715 W 9th St, Wilmington, DE 19805.
