Jon Michael Maier Sr passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at the age of 72 after a 2-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born December 29, 1953, he was a devoted parent and a dedicated member of the community serving on little league, Indian guides, and the civic association.
Mike was a lifelong auto technician and respected business owner. After literally growing up in the family service station business at Marsh & Wilson Roads and then having to take over the business in 1975 at the age of 21 after the unexpected death of his father. Mike also in 1978 founded Atlantic Auto Parts & Boxwood Auto Parts Stores. Mike sold Maiers Auto Service after 50 years in 2019 and retired.
Mike graduated from Mt. Pleasant school district in 1971. Mike took great pride in the fact that he spent 12 years with classmates forming lifelong bonds. Mike and Bonnie stayed very active with the reunion committees to maintain those bonds.
Mike and Bonnie spent their entire lives vacationing in Fenwick Island, DE. Finally purchasing a house in 2003. Mike was an active 45-year member of Cavaliers Country Club (Newark, DE) and more recently a member of Bear Trap Dunes (Bethany Beach, DE) forming many cherished friendships and memories.
Mikes parents were part of the founding members of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard on Foulk Road. Mike and his family both grew up in the church.
Mike was proceeded in death by his parents Richard “Dick” P. Maier Sr and Maybelle “Trudy” Maier. Mike is survived by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 50 years Bonnie (Goodman); two children Jon Michael Jr (Cameron) of West Grove with favorite grandson Michael David and daughter Jaime Lynn and dog Georgi in Wilmington; two brothers: Rick of Macon, GA and Jay (Julie) of Knoxville, TN; eleven nieces and nephews and 17 great nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at McCrery & Harra, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE, on Sunday, May 31st, from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 1st, at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, located at 1530 Foulk Road, Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
