David James Bell, 79, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 19, 2026. Born in Washington, D.C., on March 22, 1947, David lived a vibrant life defined by his deep faith, love of history, and passion for music.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Marsha; their two sons, Robin and Justin; and their partners, Sora and Anne.
In his youth, David discovered a lifelong love of music by singing in the choir and learning to play the bassoon. He attended Wilson High School - now Jackson-Reed High School, a name honoring his history teacher, Edna Bird Jackson, who was the school’s first African American teacher. Her profound influence instilled in David an enduring appreciation for history that guided his educational and personal path for the rest of his life.
David went on to study history and literature at Knox College. Driven by a desire to see the world, he spent a year abroad at the Frei University of Berlin in 1968 and worked that summer in a steel factory in Germany’s Rhineland. He continued his studies in the United States to earn his master’s degree in Russian History from Binghamton University.
During this era, David was easily recognizable by his long beard and the Triumph motorcycle he rode. He actively participated in Vietnam War protests that successfully shut down his campus and was always eager to share his historical perspective with his fellow students.
While living in Binghamton, David met Marsha. The couple briefly lived on a farm and worked at an IBM Factory in upstate NY before returning to the Washington area. There, David joined the family business at Harmony Memorial Park, working alongside his father, Richard, his brother, Jeremy, and his sister, Jennifer.
Deeply committed to his faith, David volunteered and sang in the choir at St. Mary’s. He also completed a comprehensive four-year Education for Ministry program through the Sewanee Seminary at the University of the South. David cherished his time at church, playing his bassoon in various bands and symphonies, reading extensively, and watching football with his sons.
After spending most of his life in the Washington, D.C., area, David and Marsha relocated to Wilmington, Delaware. The move brought them closer to the Revolutionary War history they both loved, allowing them to actively participate in historical reenactments. In retirement, David volunteered at Grace Episcopal Church in Wilmington and continued playing his bassoon across three different bands.
David loved to travel, play his bassoon, and immerse himself in literature. He cared deeply about numerous social justice causes, and his twin passions for music and history remained central to his identity. Guided by his unwavering faith, David was at peace to the very end. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Grace Episcopal Church, 4900 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803, at 11:15 a.m. Family and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
