Edward (Ed) Bruno, age 72 of Hockessin, DE, fought a long battle with cancer that ended on November 28, 2025. He was born in NJ and had Garden State blood in his veins. [Ed](<>)was thrilled when he did a DNA test to confirm his Mediterranean, western European and distant Asian heritage, saying that he felt like a global citizen. He reveled in his (relatively) high percentage of Neanderthal genes.
Ed loved, first and foremost, his family but was especially proud of his son, Andrew, and Andrew’s family, Lauren and Zoe. He had the utmost respect and gratitude for his beloved parents. Ed treasured his relationships with Arthur, Carol, Janet, Howard and Lois and their spouses and families. But he had a special place in his heart for all of the “grands”.
Ed earned a degree in Forestry from Cook College/Rutgers University. He loved trees, fishing, nature, reading, the blues, gardening, Philadelphia sports teams, building furniture from cutting the tree to the final product and hiking. In his 20’s, Ed started woodcarving, and over the years, he carved hundreds of pieces. In his late 60’s, Ed started painting and was a prolific watercolor artist.
He was a man of intellect, integrity and strong opinions. Ed had strident political views and valued equity and compassion for his fellow humans. He volunteered with Special Olympians at Fitness Fridays at the Hockessin Athletic Club; he loved the athletes and was so proud of their accomplishments. Ed volunteered at Marshall Steam Museum in Yorklyn, Delaware. But his favorite thing to do, outside of family time, was spending time with his very dear friends in the Woodcarvers of Delaware.
He will be remembered for his commitment and devotion to his wife, his affinity for cats and Sasquatch, his complete and utter disdain for bananas, and his desire to create art that honors nature. Ed was, indeed, a man of integrity and forthrightness.
If you would like to honor Ed’s memory, the family suggests memorial donations be sent to Special Olympics Delaware or the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 2 from 10-11 am, at the Hartefeld National, 1 Hartefeld Drive, Avondale, PA 19311 where a celebration of life will follow at 11 am. Burial will be held privately.
