Leonard, Mark G.

Mark G. Leonard December 5, 1957 – November 19, 2025

Mark G. Leonard passed away peacefully under hospice care at Wilmington Hospital on November 19, 2025, with his beloved partner, Junko Fukunaga, by his side. He was 67 years old.

Born at Delaware Hospital, Mark was a lifelong resident of New Castle, Delaware. He was the son of the late Joseph Leonard Sr. and Lillian Leonard, and the stepson of his late stepmothers Veronica and Marion. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Joseph and Robert. Mark is survived by his brothers Lawrence, Edward, and Charles.

He is survived by his partner of 27 years, Junko Fukunaga. Mark and Junko shared a loving and supportive partnership that was central to both of their lives.

He also leaves behind his daughter, Kristi Ann Evans (Rick) of New Castle; his grandchildren, Alyssa (Aiden), Angel, and Brooklyn; and his great-grandchild, Wyatt. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Mark is additionally survived by Junko’s family, who held a special place in his life: Tadamichi Fukunaga (predeceased by Mutsuko), and Kayko, James, and Emiko Distler.

Mark attended St. Peter’s School and later the Colonial School District, graduating from William Penn High School in 1976. Drawn to hands-on work, he pursued a career in the trades and became a carpenter. Over the years, he explored a variety of other jobs and interests. It was through his work that he met Junko, beginning a long and loving partnership. Together, they shared the joy of caring for three dogs during their life together.

At the end of his life, Mark bravely faced Alzheimer’s disease. Despite the challenges the illness brought, he continued to show moments of warmth, humor, and connection—moments that reflected the true heart of who he was. Mark’s family remains deeply grateful to all who supported him throughout his illness.
