Janet R. Harkins, age 83 of Wilmington, DE passed peacefully with loved ones by her side on November 22, 2025.
She was born and raised in Wilmington and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Julia Hanson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Ryder and a brother, James Hanson. Janet graduated from Wilmington HS in 1960. Janet then married her high school sweetheart, John Harkins, Jr.
She had worked at various jobs but bringing her the most joys was raising her family. Janet was not one to slow down after her children grew. She took painting and pottery classes, played Mah Jongg, aways entertained or organized activities at her condo and was constantly working on her memoir. What she cherished most of all was spending time with her grandchildren.
Her husband of 52 years, John J. Harkins Jr., died in 2018. Janet is survived by her sons, John J. III, Joseph and Jeremy (Sara Shinn); 6 grandchildren, Amber, Zack, Brennen, Hunter, Mia and Teagan. Janet will be missed by her family and many friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, December 5 from 10-11 am, at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington where a memorial service will follow at 11 am. Burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Food Bank of Delaware, 222 Lake Dr., Newark, DE 19702.
