Linda Kenyon, 76, born in Pound, Virginia, but raised in the Forty Acres neighborhood of Wilmington, Delaware passed away on Sunday September 28th at Christiana Hospital after a brief battle with cancer.
She worked in the restaurant industry for over 30 years between Temptations Ice Cream Shop and Edda’s Deli. She started working after all three of her children were in school. We all joked that she should have been a nurse because she took care of everyone else. When her children were little, she was known as the Kool Aid mom because she was always making pitchers of Kool Aid for the neighborhood kids. She would do anything for anyone, which is why anyone who met her loved her.
She was a cake baker and decorator in the 70s, 80s and 90s. She made character cakes, birthday cakes, wedding cakes and adult cakes (which were a big hit). She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching General Hospital. Everyone knew not to call her between 3:00 and 4:00, but Rita managed to call her all of the time between that hour. But, the absolute most important part of her life was her family, especially her three children and her one and only grandson, Matthew.
She was predeceased by her loving and nagging husband of 54 years, Walter Kenyon Sr., her parents Hubert and Charlotte Hicks (Blevins), her seven brothers, Charles, Sonny, James, Mac, Glynn, Wayne and Alvin and two sisters, Ruby and Cookie.
She is survived by her loving family. Her son, Walter Kenyon Jr, daughters Linda Lappert (Steve) and Christina Kenyon and her one and only grandson, Matthew who she loved with all of her heart. Her nieces, Rita Gentry, who she helped raise as a child, Sheila Brooks and her husband Wayne, who helped out tremendously, Tina Barlow (Nicholas), Delta Smith (Andy) and numerous other nieces and nephews and close friends.
The family would like to thank the incredible staff of St Francis Outpatient Surgery Center especially Nancy Cunningham, Martin Zelaya and Dr Ryan Bonshock. She thought a lot of all of the staff.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Delaware SPCA and St Francis Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, in Wilmington, Delaware on Tuesday, October 7th. Visitation will begin at 10am and service will start at 11am. Burial will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle.
