Our beloved Jo Ellen died in New Castle, Delaware at the age of 75 from breast cancer. She was surrounded by family: her sister E.G. Crichton, her brother Oliver Crichton, Joan Hirschfeld—who was like a sister to her—and her loving community at the Choices for Community Living group home.
Jo Ellen was the daughter of Katherine and Oliver Crichton, who died in 2011 and 2013, respectively. She was also preceded in death by her brother Thomas, who died in 2013. She is survived by her brothers David and Oliver, as well as her sister E.G.
From 1955 to 2004, Jo Ellen lived at the Delaware Hospital for the Mentally Retarded at Stockley, where she was regularly visited by her family. Her parents, Oliver and Kay, were deeply involved in her care and were active members of the Delaware Association for Retarded Citizens, now known as The Arc of Delaware.
In 2004, Jo Ellen moved to a group home on Dora Moors Lane in New Castle, where she was beloved by staff and fellow residents. With the support of hospice, she was able to remain there throughout her illness.
For the past year and a half, Jo Ellen attended the Forward Journey Adult Day Program in New Castle. She thrived in that setting, where the staff and fellow attendees became an important extension of her community.
We all cherished Jo Ellen and the time we spent with her. She was a unique and strong-willed individual who expressed her wants and needs through movements and vocalizations. Her love for those around her was generous and unforgettable.
We will miss Jo Ellen, always.
