Henry H. Gunther III passed away in Wilmington, DE on July 7, 2025. Born in Wilmington, he was the son of Henry H. Gunther II and Margaret E. (Rossiter) Gunther.
He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1957. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and then served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. Upon discharge, he earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He began his working career at DuPont and retired from Conrail in 1999. He was a member of Sigma Xi.
Henry was an active participant in the handball league at the Central Y in Wilmington and played in handball tournaments along the East Coast. Henry was also an avid runner and participated in many Races2Run events. He ran in the Boston Marathon six times, and in the Berlin, Germany Marathon while researching family genealogy. Henry enjoyed summers at Rehoboth Beach as a boy and then at his house with his own family and friends.
Henry is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Gunther (née Dunlap); son, Stephen (Leigh Ann); daughter, Elizabeth (Chris); and grandchildren, Ophelia, Ingrid, Lars and Lyla.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 24, 2025 at Lower Brandywine Cemetery on Rt. 52. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to the Wilmington Central YMCA, 501 West 11th St., Wilmington, DE 19801.
