John J. Newton, age 76, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
He was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Elizabeth (DePalma) and John J. Newton, Sr. John enjoyed a long and successful career in banking. He worked at CoreStates Bank (now Wells Fargo) for many years and later retired as a Senior Manager. As a banker, he had the intellect and integrity required to handle the serious responsibility of working with other people’s money. Yet he was equally known for his quick wit and his ability to make people feel comfortable, whether at work or in his free time.
John’s passion was music. He was a lifelong music collector, writer, and producer, contributing articles and liner notes to various publications. He produced records and CDs and was well known in the music collecting community for his extensive knowledge of the industry. His collection included rare 78s, radio transcripts, test pressings, and movie memorabilia.
He loved sharing his knowledge with anyone interested, including film studios, where he was held in high regard. John received credits for sharing his expertise in many magazines and books. His knowledge of the musical artists he loved was unparalleled.
If someone asked whether he owned a recording of a very obscure singer or band, he’d give a little smirk and simply say, “maybe,” with a wink. Soon enough, an undocumented test pressing or rare radio broadcast would appear on his turntable as if by magic.
John will be deeply missed by those left behind, including his beloved wife of 35 years, Holly (Hession) Newton; his two sons, John and Joe; his brother, Brian of Philadelphia; his two granddaughters, Sophia and Hailey; his grandson, Alexander; and his daughter-in-law, Amanda. He is also survived by a large and loving extended family, including step-family members Gretchen Bazela, Alesia Griffith, their families, and their children.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 12, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE, where a memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Longwood Gardens or the charity of your choice.
