Calvo, Mary Ann (DiCamilla)

Mary Ann (DiCamilla) Calvo, age 73, of Wilmington, DE passed peacefully on Thursday, June 26th at her home, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Mary Ann had a rich life. She was born on October 23, 1951 in Wilmington, the youngest daughter of Frederick/Fritz DiCamilla and Alice (Grogan) DiCamilla. She grew up with her siblings Kathleen, John, Frederick, and Christine, whom she stayed close with her entire life. Despite being the youngest, Mary Ann was a spitfire, known as “Dynamite” by the other children in the neighborhood. Growing up in Bellefonte DE, Mary Ann joined her siblings working in the family-owned DiCamilla’s Sweet Shop, a popular ice cream and candy store.

Mary Ann graduated from Mt Pleasant High School. She worked at Delaware Trust and Dupont before she met her former husband, Dan Calvo, whom she married at St. Helena’s on March 24, 1984. They had one daughter, Colleen, whom they raised with love, good humor, and lots of travel on wonderful vacations.

Mary Ann was a loving mother to Colleen, and more than that they were best friends. Through Colleen and her husband, Matthew, Mary Ann had a grandson, Finnegan Bessey, now aged three. Mary Ann was the best of grandmothers - or as Finn liked to call her, ‘me-house’ (as he was always going to “Grammy’s house”). Finnegan loved his weekly Costco trips with his Grammy. Any and all errands were made more fun by her presence.

Family was the centerpiece of Mary Ann’s life. Caring and devoted, she was involved in the lives of her siblings, nieces, and nephews. She gave generously and without hesitation, opening her home often for wonderful gatherings of family and friends. An avid gardener and a loving dog mom, she made her home a beautiful and lively place to visit.

Remaining to celebrate Mary Ann’s life and cherish her memory are her daughter Colleen, son-in-law Matthew, and grandson Finnegan; her siblings Kathleen, John, Frederick, and Christine; her nieces and nephews Amy, Andrew, Elizabeth, Erin, Matthew, and Meredith; along with a number of grand-nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday July 2 at 11am at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 901 N. Dupont St. Wilmington 19805. Friends are welcome from 9:45 – 10:45. Burial will be held privately.
