Michael L. Coupe, age 74 of Wilmington, DE passed away at his home on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

He was born in Chester, PA and raised in Chester and Claymont, DE. Michael is the son of the late Gertrude (McCarthy) and Arthur H. Coupe.

Mike graduated from Mt Pleasant High School in 1968 and received an associate’s degree in computer programming from Delaware Technical & Community College and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wilmington College.

Mike was a career civil servant with nearly 40 years of service for New Castle County, culminating with appointment as Chief Financial Officer in 2012.

Mike’s commitment to helping others extended well beyond his career—he was always there for his daughters, siblings, family and friends, never hesitating to lend his time and hands. He had a particular passion for home renovation projects, whether at his own house or someone else’s. To those who knew him best, he was affectionately known as “Chief.” He especially cherished time with his family, and nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his seven grandchildren.

Michael is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy E. (DeEmedio) Coupe; three daughters, Melissa Mangrelli (Robert), Kathryn Zamonski (Zach) and Stacey Middendorf (Blake); 7 grandchildren, Vincent, Andrew, Aubrey, Macklin, Tanner, Mia and Louis; 9 siblings, Marie Chew (Ken), Arthur H., Jr., Bernadette Coupe, Ronald (Debra), Edward (Debora), Nancy Evans (Tom), Christine Eby, John (Wendy) and Robert (Pam), as well as several nieces and nephews; and many close and dear friend.

A visitation will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Rd., Wilmington from 11 am to 12:45 pm on Friday, June 27. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the church at 1:00 pm. Burial will be private.
