Meyer, Stephen Howard

Stephen Howard Meyer, age 57, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on June 10, 2025, of sudden heart failure in his home. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Ann and the late Steve Meyer. He was a 1985 graduate of Salesianum School and University of Delaware in 1995.

Steve loved sports and was an avid fan of the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers. He played football from age 10 through high school and was proud to wear #21 on his Sallies’ football jersey. In his youth he played Piedmont Little League baseball, and then ice hockey as an adult. He became a huge NASCAR fan. Over the years, he was an ice hockey referee, and in most recent years he refereed HS Football and umpired HS Girls’ Softball.

Steve had been an insurance investigator for many years in Baltimore, New York and Wilmington. For the past several years he’s been at Farmers of Salem, a company that he loved, especially his coworkers who seemed to love him back.

He had many friends who have lots of stories to tell about him, all good stories; funny and mischievous, too many to list, just like his father! He was loyal, charming, and he stepped up at any time to help others, especially when you needed help moving, he was your man. He was close to his family, especially his mom, sister, brother and his niece. Steve was like a brother to many of his friends, as well as being “Uncle Steve” to their children. He was also beloved by Jill’s in-laws.

Steve is survived by his mother, Ann of Hockessin, DE; sister Jill (Geoffrey) Dawson of Newark, DE; brother, Rich (Darla Elsburnd) of Brooklyn, NY; beloved niece Julia Dawson of Newark. As well as several loving Aunts, Uncles and Cousins, and his loving, close friends. He’s predeceased by his father, Stephen, and Uncle Paul Gribbell.

There are no words to express our shock and grief. The impact of his loss is almost too much to bear. Steve, we will always carry you in our hearts, but we know you are still with us in spirit with dad.
