Elwood Brinton Evans, Jr., affectionately known as “Woody” or “J.R.”, passed away after a courageous battle with dementia on April 21, 2025 at the age of 86. Born on April 14, 1939 in Wilmington, Delaware and was the beloved son of Louise (White) Evans and Elwood B. Evans, Sr.
Woody grew up in Wilmington and attended No. 30 Grade School, Warner Junior High, and P.S. duPont High School. As a boy, he cherished the time he spent with his pet goat at his grandmother’s farm on Concord Pike. In grade school he was a ventriloquist, performing at local schools and was on a children’s talent show in Philadelphia.
After graduating in 1957, Woody began a plumbing apprenticeship with the family business, Evans & Evans Plumbing – later known as Evco - where he became a master plumber. He also attended the Wharton Business School in Philadelphia. He was an active leader in his field, serving as past president of the PHCC Contractors of Delaware, a member of the National PHCC Association, and a contributor to apprenticeship programs and advisory boards. He also taught plumbing programs and mentored young tradespeople.
Woody proudly served in the Delaware Air National Guard and was a longtime member of the Rotary Club, the Elks Club and Indian River Yacht Club. In retirement, he enjoyed greeting customers at Home Depot, where he loved reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones.
He had a passion for fishing, boating, waterskiing, and spending time at his beloved family cottage in Riverdale. Known for his great sense of humor, Woody always had a story or a joke to share. He found joy in travelling, attending conventions, tailgating at the U of D, being with family and bringing people together with his warm, outgoing nature.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister Arlene Brodie and brother-in-law Vincent Brodie. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Phyllis Maske Evans; daughter, Kim Evans (James McNorton); son, Elwood Brinton Evans, III (Heather); two granddaughters, Brooke Evans and Courtney Strohecker (Ryan); two nephews Darren Brodie (Gina), Jeff Brodie (Jackie) and extended family.
Woody will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, and the way he made everyone feel like a friend.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday April 30 from 10:30 – 11:30 with a service beginning at 11:30 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike Wilmington 19808. Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org). or to a charity of your choice.
