Jester, Harry

Harry Charles Jester, 95, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025. Harry was a graduate of Archmere Academy before attending and graduating from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He was an elementary school teacher in Chester and Garnet Valley before coming to Brandywine High School teaching history in 1967, then moving to Concord High School where he remained until his retirement in 1991. He attended Holly Oak Calvary United Methodist Church with Shirley Jester, his wife of 43 years.

He enjoyed spending all of his time with the love of his life, Shirley. Together they enjoyed family time, their favorite bands, Whirled Peas, John and June Gallagher, Bellevue Park concerts and vacations in Wildwood and Bethany beaches. He also enjoyed time with their friends at the Spirit of 76 club, where he met Shirley. He was also a musician and enjoyed playing piano and guitar, his favorite was country music. His other passions included US Military history, professional wrestling, and Hogan’s Heroes.

Harry was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Madaline Jester; his wife, Shirley A. Jester; his step-sons, David Bender and Richard Bender; and his step-daughter, Leslie A. Atkins (Tom Atkins). He is survived by his step-daughters, Cheryl Wheeler (Jim Brown) and Kelly Bender; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Vitas Healthcare Hospice for their care, responsiveness and compassion over the last couple of weeks. The family would also like to thank Elaine, his favorite aide, who was so kind and caring to him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at Holy Family Catholic Church (15 Gender Rd, Newark, DE 19713). Friends may call beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Gracelawn Memorial Park will follow. In lieu of flowers the family suggests you do a random act of kindness or send a contribution to the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company (1006 Brandywine Blvd., Wilmington, DE 19809) who provided services when needed, or donate to a charity of your choice.
