Louise Ditchburn, age 101, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Laceyville, PA, died on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Christiana Care, Newark.
Born to Fred and Effie Salsman, the eldest of twelve children, Louise assisted on the family farm with animals, crops, household chores and care of her younger siblings. She graduated high school in Laceyville. As a young adult, Louise held several jobs related to the war effort. Following the war years, she met her lifelong love, Ernest Ditchburn, and they married in 1948.
After settling in Chester, Pennsylvania, the couple moved to Wilmington, Delaware where Louise worked as a bank teller for Wilmington Savings Fund Society. Both Ernest and Louise were devoted members of Christ United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer of the United Methodist Women. Louise generously lent her crafting and sewing expertise in support of the church’s many charitable efforts. As avid baseball fans, she and Ernest enjoyed attending many Phillies games together.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest R. Ditchburn and her siblings, Robert Salsman , Leila Smith and Freda Stedge. Louise is survived by her children, Linda Ditchburn, Sandra Chapman and Gary Ditchburn, and her siblings, Martha Adams, Marjorie Bahr, Thelma Larabee, Letha Robinson, Fred Salsman Jr., Glenn Salsman, Harold Salsman and Nancy Vargason.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 11:00a.m.-12:00p.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808 where a service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
