John P. McLaughlin, age 77, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Accent Hospice, Christiana Hospital.
He was born in Chester, PA and raised in Garnet Valley. John was the son of the late Mary May (Shanko) and Phillip Arthur McLaughlin. He graduated from Media High School in 1964.
After high school, John briefly worked at the former A&P grocery store; Branmar Plaza Wilmington then proudly served his country in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War in the US Air Force. Upon returning home, he returned to the A&P where he met the love of his life, Joanne M. Sansone, they married in 1970. In the early 80’s John then started his career at the US Postal Service, Talleyville, then Edgemoor as a letter carrier. John retired in 2013.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, harness racing, gardening and camping. John was known for his quick wit and his one liners. Bringing him the most joy was time with his family; at Indian River Inlet, Knobels , Phillies, Sixers and Flyers games and watching the Eagles on Sundays.His two grandchildren were his apple of his eye.
John is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Joanne; three children, Phil McLaughlin (Michele Cole), Jennifer Campbell (Mark Barrett) and Tim “Worm” McLaughlin; two grandchildren, Emily Ruth and Tyler Christian Campbell; a sister, Micci Lily. He is also preceded in death by his sister Elaine Peters.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 20 from 6-8 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington. The family request you wear Philadelphia Sports Teams attire on Sunday. On Monday August 21 a viewing will be held also at St. Mary Magdeline Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington from 9:45 to 10:30 am. A eulogy will be read at 10:45 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
