Alva Hemshrot, age 88, of Seaford, Delaware passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2023.

Alva was a native Delawarean born in Wilmington. She graduated from P.S. du Pont High School (1952) and continued her education at Goldey Beacom College (Business school - 1954). She first met her husband while volunteering for the USO. Gene A. Hemshrot was serving in the Air Force and stationed at the Wilmington Airport. On June 9, 1956 they were married and they were blessed with 64 years together. Delaware was always their home and they lived in Newark, Bethany Beach, Milford, and most recently in Seaford at the ACTS Manor House.

Alva did some modeling in her late teens and was first employed as a secretary for Pope & Kruse Architects. She then moved on to her career as administrative assistant at the Delaware Hospital, Medical Center of Delaware, and Christiana Care. She served with excellence for 34 years before retiring.

Alva and Gene were members of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Newark, DE, Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View, DE, and later transferred membership to Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford, DE.

Alva is survived by her daughter, Linda Kaye (Hemshrot) Aiken; her son-in-law, Edward G. Aiken III; her grandson, Edward G. Aiken IV and his wife Roselyne Montanez-Aiken; one niece and four nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Gene A. Hemshrot; her mother, Dorothy C. Williams; her father, Alfred A. Williams; her brother, Wayne Williams; and one niece.

The funeral will be held on Friday, June 23 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808. A public viewing will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at noon. The burial will be private at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
