Stroble, Shirley

CONCORDVILLE, Pa. – Shirley Ann O’Hara Stroble died Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the Maris Grove senior living community at the age of 91. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., to John C. and Dorothy McDonell O’Hara in 1931, she grew up in the Edgewood suburb of Pittsburgh. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1949 and the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1953. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority at Tech.

She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Rita Jean Murtha.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert W. Stroble of Maris Grove; two sons, Dave Stroble and wife Stephanie Stroble of Burlington, N.C., and Jeff Stroble and wife Lea Purcell of Kennett Square, Pa.; step-grandsons Chris Cooper and wife Valerie Detweiler of Key West, Fla., and Henry Sells and wife Ashley Sells of Virginia Beach, Va., and step-granddaughter Sam Erks and husband Eric Erks of Burlington, N.C.; and two nephews and three nieces.

After their marriage in Pittsburgh the Strobles also lived in Newark, N.J., Wilmington, Del., Birmingham, Ala., Kingwood, Texas, and Clermont, Fla., before moving to Maris Grove.

Shirley worked as a secretary for several businesses and for her parishes in Pittsburgh and Wilmington. She and Bob were founding members of the Church of the Holy Child Catholic Church in Wilmington and rejoined the parish when they came back to Concordville.

Shirley made friends wherever she lived and excelled at maintaining long-term, long-distance friendships. After moving to Florida the Strobles went to Rehoboth Beach, Del., to vacation with the same set of couples every Labor Day week for more than 25 years.

She was a lifelong bridge player, and an avid investor in dividend stocks.

Her family is thankful for the caring and compassion of the staff of Rose Court at Maris Grove.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 15 at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, Del., preceded by visitation at the church at 10:30 a.m. Interment at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine cemetery in Greenville, Del. will be private.
