Rutter, Edith M.

Edith Louise Miller Savin Rutter, of Newark, DE., passed away peacefully on Sunday April 30, 2023 at Churchman Village Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a short illness.

Edith was born in Wilmington, Delaware, daughter of the late Willard E “Chunky” Miller and Anna “Louise” Miller. Edith was predeceased by her oldest son David W. and the two loves of her life, David C. Savin and Leonard E. Rutter. Edith was married to David for fifty-one years, raising two sons. Her second marriage was almost 18 years with Leonard. Also predeceasing Edith were her sister Mildred Harley and two nephews Bob and John Henderson.

She was a 1949 graduate of PS duPont High School, who often referred to themselves as “the 49ers”.

1949 was also the year she joined Naomi Rebekah Lodge No. 3 Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Both of her husbands were Odd Fellows, in more ways than one. We loved them dearly.

After spending thirty years working for the DuPont Company in Textile Fibers at the Chestnut Run site, she enjoyed traveling and spending time at her second home on the Indian River.

Edith is survived by her son Rick and daughter-in-law Sherry, her grandchildren Dawn (Rich), Sean (Jacky), Erin (Craig), Sarah, her great grand children Scott (Candy), Tori (Viktor), Nicholas (Breanne), Gloria, James, Henry, Noah, and four great-great grandsons. Edith also leaves behind her nieces Lee (Vinny) and Lynn (Michael), niece-in-law Barbi, grand nieces Laura and Heather and their families.

At Edith’s request, services will be private. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your favorite charity.
