Florence E. McDowell, age 95, passed away on April 10, 2023, at Sunrise Assisted Living. She was born in Chester, PA to the late John C and Mabel Wakeling. Florence was graduated from Chester High School in 1945 and Penn State in 1949. She earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Delaware.
Florence was a teacher, impacting the lives of many students from first grade to high school. She will be remembered for her feisty and independent nature and take-charge personality. Florence and her husband enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake and spending time at the beach.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Robert V. McDowell, III. Florence is survived by her daughters, F. Emme King (Lester)and Roberta J. Coleman (Randal) her grandchildren, Robert, Daniel, Thomas and Samuel King and Eric, Nathan and David Coleman, her great-grandchildren, Molly, Wilson, and Parker King.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202 South of Silverside Road), Wilmington, DE 19803 where a service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Private burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE.
