Williams, Ronald Lee

Ronald Lee Williams, also known as Ron or Butch, age 84 of Clayton, DE and formerly of Newark, DE passed peacefully with loved ones by his side on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Kent General Hospital. Ron was born in Glassboro, NJ and raised in Pitman, NJ. He was the son of the late Sara (Cunningham) and Victor O. Williams and attended Pitman High School prior to enlisting in the military.

Ron first joined the United States Navy and served for two years. He then enlisted in the US Air Force where he served for 20 years. Ron retired in 1976 as an aircraft mechanic with the rank of TSgt.

He then began his second career with the DuPont Company at Chestnut Run. He was a millwright in facilities services and retired after 15 years. Ron, never to be the one to sit still, also worked as a chauffeur for Eagle Limousine for a few years.

He enjoyed playing softball. While stationed in New York, he played, as a catcher, on the team at Hancock Field AFB. Ron was on the All-State Team multiple times and was named MVP two years in a row. He also managed Dupont’s Chestnut Run softball team when they were league champions in 1987 and 1989. When Ron could not play anymore, he joined the Delaware Umpires Association. He also like to hunt, fish, bowl, shoot darts, and play golf.

Ron is survived by two children, Debra A. Sparks and Robert L. Williams; his companion of 37 years Cynthia J. Guelle; four grandchildren, Joseph Sparks II, Tyler (Kelsey) Sparks, Rachael (Blake) Peffley and Robert (Robbie) Williams, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Braxton and Braelynn Peffley and three siblings, Charles Williams, Victor Williams and Malcolm Williams. He is also preceded in death by his brother Ralph Williams and two sisters Audrey Stewart and Melissa Venable.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 22, beginning at 10:30 am, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE where a funeral service will follow at 11:30. Burial will then be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to American Heart Association, 200 Continental Dr., Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713.
