David M. Whittington, age 70 of Newark, DE, passed away with his loved ones by his side on Friday, March 10, 2023, at Christiana Hospital. He was born and raised in Wilmington, DE and was the son of the late Lillian and Paul Whittington. David graduated from De La Warr High School in 1970 and subsequently attended the University of Delaware.
David started his career as an installer for ADT (later Tyco International). He retired in 2013 as an operational director after 39 years with the company. After retirement, David worked for three years as a part-time public safety officer at Cecil College.
Throughout his life, David was an avid golfer and rarely went a week without playing a game of golf, even in the colder months. He was a member of the Delaware State Golf Association (DSGA) and frequently officiated local golf tournaments. One of his highlights was his trip to Augusta, GA in 2019 for the PGA Masters Tournament. David also enjoyed riding his bike, and was proud of his participation in Bike to the Bay
What he cherished the most in life was time spent with his children. David avidly supported both Bryan and Kelly in whatever activities they pursued, whether it meant always attending Bryan’s crew meets in high school, never missing a football game when Kelly was in marching band in high school and college, or simply watching Bryan and Kathryn’s dogs whenever they went out of town.
David is survived by his two children, Kelly Whittington and Bryan Whittington, as well as Bryan’s wife, Kathryn Whittington. He was also preceded in death by his best friend Trish Whittington, who passed away in 2008. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to The Seeing Eye, P.O. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 20, at 11 am at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE where friends may call after 10 am. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle.
