Mason, Edwin L. Jr.

Edwin L. Mason, Jr. passed away on March 3, 2023 at Foulk Living Health Center. He was born in Hagerstown, MD on August 19, 1933 the son of Edwin L. Mason and Camilla Roulette Mason. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Romney WV and then, when Ed was a junior in high school, they moved to Keyser WV where he graduated from Keyser High. Ed then went on to West Virginia University completing his bachelor’s degree. In December 1955 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Benning GA and then shipped to Korea where he served until his discharge in December 1957. Shortly thereafter he returned to WVU to begin work on a master’s degree.

In September 1958 Ed began his teaching career at Geo. Read Jr. High School in New Castle. It was here that he met Janet, the love of his life. They married in 1960 and spent 62 wonderful years together. In 1961 Ed obtained a position teaching math and science at Alexis I. duPont High School where he remained for 30 years teaching mostly physics courses, retiring in 1991. During this time Ed completed his master’s degree at WVU and studied at various summer institutes at Yale, Purdue, St. Lawrence University and Wisconsin State. After retiring from public schools, Ed taught physics part-time at Archmere Academy for 3 years.

In retirement Ed and Janet traveled extensively in the United States and enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and recently with their 2 great grandsons.

Ed is survived by his wife, Janet (nee McInnes); daughter, Jennifer Watson; son, Randolph Mason (Michele) of Kansas City MO; granddaughter, Sara Lewis (Nicholas); grandson, Richard Watson (Ashley Gregory); brother, David Mason (Margaret) of Douglas MI; sister, Camilla Momeyer of Georgetown SC as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Compassionate Care Hospice for all of their wonderful support.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington DE 19803, where friends may call from 10:00 AM to Noon. Interment in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to a charity of your choice in Ed’s memory.
