Janet Miller, age 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 25, 2023.
Janet is survived by her children Jennifer and Darrin (Troy); grandchildren Maria (Bobby) and Martin, and a great-grandson; her sister Phyllis Panico (Dick); and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son David and her sister Josephine Goldberg.
Janet grew up in White Plains, New York. Auditioning on piano and violin, she was accepted into the renowned Crane School of Music at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Potsdam, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education (1955) and a Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society member. One of her fondest college memories was performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the SUNY orchestra. She achieved a Master of Arts in Music Education from Columbia University, New York (1957), with a thesis on 17th-century composers. She later earned her license as a registered nurse.
A kind, positive, and encouraging person, Janet had two careers inspiring and supporting young minds: as an elementary school teacher, and as a nurse at a children’s psychiatric center. Her most cherished titles, however, were Mom and Nana, full of lots of love and pride for her children and grandchildren.
Janet valued education, literacy, and the arts throughout her lifetime. She enjoyed book discussion groups, traveling, music, theater, poetry, dancing, card nights with friends, dining out, and especially family time.
