Nied, Genevieve E.

Genevieve E. Nied, age 94, of Claymont, DE passed away peacefully on February 21, 2023.

She was born and raised in Thayer, IA and was the daughter of the late Letha L. (Lake) and Harold I. Gifford, Sr. Gen attended Winterset HS in Iowa and graduated from Hyde Point HS, Chicago, IL in 1946.The pursuit for continuing education was a constant quest throughout her life. She achieved this through self-study, earning various certifications and course enrollment in the Univ. of DE Life Long Learning Center.

After moving to Delaware, she worked at Phoenix Steel as a secretary for 10 years. Gen then was the executive secretary to the Director of Finance at the former Riverside Hospital. She then worked as the church secretary at Concordia Lutheran Church for over 10 years and retired in 2000.Gen also worked in sales at Kohls, Lindt Chocolates and Gordon Jewelers.

She was also a member of Concordia Lutheran Church where she was a Deacon and a member of the Altar Guild.

Gen enjoyed many genres of music and singing. She loved dancing and instilled this joy into her children thus creating many happy feet. She was an avid reader of many styles of writing and had a particular interest in history. One would be amazed by her knowledge of football, especially her Eagles and Chicago Bears. She took delight in traveling, baking, painting, playing games and cards. Bringing her the most joy was the time she spent with her family and church family. Gen also loved her many cats over the years and her grand-pets.

Her husband of 31 years, Albert G. died in 2010. Gen is survived by her 2 daughters, Pat Sparano (Joe) and Carol DeSantis; 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by Albert’s daughter Lori with whom she had a special relationship. Gen is also preceded in death by her sons, George, Rory, Mark, Charles, Robert, and Richard Reitz; her daughters, Barbara Cook and Becky Westinghouse and her 2 brothers, Phil and Harold Gifford, Jr.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the caring staff at Parkview Nursing & Rehab Center.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 1 from 1-2pm at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3003 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810 where a funeral service will follow at 2pm. Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Concordia Lutheran Church or to Parkview 2801 West 6th Street, Wilmington, DE 19805 in memory of Gen Nied.
