Derr, Ruth Esther

The service will be livestreamed here: https://my.gather.app/remember/ruth-derr

Ruth Esther Derr, 86, died unexpectedly and peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2023.

She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth Ann & Ric (Haschak), Mary Beth & Glenn (Davis), Diane & Michael (DeStefano), ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, her sister, Nancy, her life-long friend, Sue, and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, John, her parents, Charles and Doris (Scheetz) Hanby, and her siblings, Shirley, Mary, Charles, Alice, Doris, and Arthur.

Ruth was as unique as the quilts she created upon her retirement from the DuPont Company. A talented seamstress and avid gardener, she was happiest when challenged by a weedy flower bed or intricate pattern. She loved bright colors and nice clothes. She believed lipstick (preferably red) was the most important cosmetic. A devoted Phillies fan, Ruth was both cheerleader and critic. When restless, Ruth enjoyed being John’s co-pilot on long car rides and trips. She collected thread, fabric and bobbins and stitched together a long and fulfilling life for herself and her family.

The family is especially grateful for the devotion and care of her aides, Synthia and Dianne, and for the love shown by the residents and staff at Shipley Living.

Services will be held at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202 South of Silverside Road), Wilmington, DE 19803 on Saturday, February 18, 2023, with a calling hour from 10:00 – 11:00am and a celebration of life at 11:00am.
