Workman, Sam

Sam Workman, age 93, died peacefully with family by his side February 5th, 2023, at Granite Farms Estates (Media, PA). Born on May 4th, 1929 in Delmar, DE, Sam’s life reflected his faith in Jesus Christ through unassuming service to people, in a variety of ways. The encouragement to “…Love your neighbor as yourself…” (Mk 12:31), he took to heart. Sam graduated from Delmar High School in 1947, then from the University of Delaware in 1952 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for General Development Corporation in Elkton, MD, from 1952-1955. He served in the U.S. Army, as a Military Instructor in the Engineers School of Fort Belvoir, VA, from 1955-1957, after which he joined the Engineering Research and Development Division of the DuPont Company. Enjoying a 28-year career in Textile Fibers, he retired in 1985.

Sam’s interests were many and with a reputation for being “able to fix anything”, he used his skills willingly and often in his Wilmington neighborhood, Brandywine Valley Baptist Church and after 2002, at his cherished Granite Farms Estates in Media, PA. Through a multitude of servant-leadership roles, community-support programs, and building or repair projects both on commercial sites and in the homes of individuals, Sam’s diplomatic wisdom quietly expressed itself as he prioritized living “in peace with everyone”, (Rom. 12:18).

Sam was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bunny, and is survived by his children, Martha W. Sommers of Wilmington, DE, Don E. and Gloria Workman of Owings Mills, MD, Douglas R, and Pamela Workman of Fallston, MD, 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 25th at Granite Farms Estates (1343 W. Baltimore Pike, Media, PA), in their Auditorium at 10AM - and at Brandywine Valley Baptist Church (7 Mt. Lebanon Rd, Wilmington, DE), at 2PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in Sam’s memory to a benevolence fund at Acts Legacy Foundation (420 Delaware Dr, P.O. Box 4222, Fort Washington, PA 19034 - memo; Granite Farms Estates), or Brandywine Valley Baptist Church (memo; Love in Action Fund).
