Holmes, George Lawrence, “Larry”

George Lawrence “Larry” Holmes, age 74 of Dover, DE, formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 11, 2023.

Larry was born and raised in Wilmington and is the son of Betty (Slacum) Holmes and the late George Albert Holmes (1977). He attended Wilmington HS and then Conrad HS after the family moved to a new home. He also attended Delaware Technical Community College studying Architecture.

Larry proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Navy and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. During this time, he was able to complete his requirements for his GED. He served from 1968 to 1972. Larry began his training at the USN Training Center, Great Lakes, IL, Company 691. He served on the USS Vancouver, USS Tulare, USS Holmes Countyand the USS Oklahoma City.

He was a “Jack of all Trades”. Larry worked as a roofer/construction with the Robert Shaw Contractors, Newark, DE, a Copier Operator with Richardson & Associates and was also a farm hand.

In 1972, he married Norma Ramos in the Philippines. Larry’s family also grow two-fold when he adopted and became a step-father to Norma’s daughter Annabel.

Larry had a lifetime membership to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter Richard J. Curry #5 and held a membership with the VFW Post 3420. He enjoyed fishing and camping, especially in Assateague Island, MD and also horseback riding. Larry held a Citizen’s Radio Station License from 1976 to 1981.

Along with his mother Betty Holmes of Bear, DE Larry is survived by his niece, Dawn Sweeney of MA; 2 nephews, Mark Rees of DE and Scott Rees of PA; his step-daughter Annabel St. Amour and her husband Dr. Bruce St. Amour both of Salem, VA and 2 step-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Xavier. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Janet Rees (2019) and Annabel’s mother Norma (2022).

A committal service officiated by Rev. Phat Vuong with military honors to follow will be held on Monday, March 6 at 11 am at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery,2465 Chesapeake City Rd, Bear, DE 19701. At 12 noon a repass will be hosted by Delaware Church of Christ(ICOC), at Christ Episcopal Church,222 Clinton St. Delaware City, DE 19706.
