She was born and raised in Leek, Staffordshire, England, and was the daughter of the late Mabel (Buckley) and Caleb Titterton. Jean received a teaching degree from Didsbury College, Manchester, England, and then at the University of Pittsburgh, she was awarded her master’s degree in education.

After marrying and starting a family, Ron was transferred to the United States, first in Durham, North Carolina, and eventually settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jean enjoyed painting, especially water coloring, and was certified to teach water coloring on cruise ships. She also loved singing in the choir at Monroeville United Methodist Church, Hockessin United Methodist Church and Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, and performed in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas with the Pittsburgh Savoyards and Arden Singers.
