Kaper, Deacon William A.

Deacon William A. Kaper, age 75 of Wilmington, DE passed away on January 31, 2023.

He was born and raised in Wilmington and was the son of the late Ann (Stepnowski) and Anthony Kaper.Bill graduated from Brown Vo-Tech in 1966. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Essex Aircraft Carrier. Upon returning home, Bill received an Associates Degree from Delaware Technical Community College in Communications.

Bill worked for Motorola Communications for over 30 years as a Service Manager. He then worked for Barclay’s Bank as an Account Manager retiring in 2010.

Bill was a devout catholic and a member of St. Matthew’s Parish. At St. Matthew’s he was involved in RICA, Parish Council and the Men’s Guild. On November 17, 2001, Bill was ordained as a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Wilmington.

He was an Assistant Scout Master for Troop #21 at St. Matthew’s Parish, a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge # 847 and was on the council of Hershey Run and the Absalom Jones Senior Center. Bill enjoyed saltwater fishing at the Delaware Beaches, picking crabs, the Beach Boys and family vacations to Bar Harbor, ME for fried clams and lobster rolls.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy (Wagner) Kaper; a son, Steven A. Kaper and his wife Jenni; a son-in-law, Norman Bower; two grandchildren, Liam and Genevieve Bower; two sisters, a twin sister, Lucille Kaper and her wife Elsi Diaz and Frances Nichols; a nephew, Scott Nichols and his wife Charlene and a niece Alissa Adams. He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Alana Kaper Bower, who passed away in July of 2021.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, February 4, at St. Matthew’s RC Church, 901 E Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE 19804 from 9 am – 10:45 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am. Burial will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Matthew’s Parish or to the Ministry of Caring, 115 E. 14th St., Wilmington, DE19801.
