Joan B. Ross, age 95, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2023.
Born March 26, 1927 to the late George and Helen Beckley in Philadelphia, PA, Joan was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. While raising four sons, she worked as a New Castle County crossing guard, handing out ginger bread cookies to the children during the holidays. During retirement, she worked at Strawbridge & Clothier, spending her hard-earned money there to keep the business afloat.
Joan had a big loving heart for all animals, especially dogs. Two of her favorites were a brother/sister pair of labs. If a stray was found she would always welcome it into the family, and also adopted from a shelter when she ran out of strays.
Mrs. Ross was predeceased by her husband, William, and sons, Robert and Glenn. She is survived by sons, Stephen (Nina), Dale, Shawn (Layne); 2 grandchildren, Nicole (Ben), Shane (Julianne); 2 great grandchildren and one on the way.
A special thank you to all those that provided care for Joan during her years of need including Ophelia, Myaisha, Tammy, Linda, Jennifer, Shawnae, and all the talented aides and nurses from Bayada Hospice.
A private memorial service will be held at the Delaware Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a military organization of your choice.
