Jenkins, George Thomas

George Thomas Jenkins, 63, passed away on December 24, 2022 at the Christiana Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Wilmington to the late Frank and Sally Jenkins. George graduated from St. Mark’s High School and attended the University of Delaware before leaving to pursue his dream of being an auto mechanic. He worked for John Reed and Shadetree Automotive, Inc. In 1987, he purchased Shadetree Automotive, Inc. and continued to own and operate the business for the next 35 years. He had a real gift when it came to fixing cars and everything else. He was always willing to lend a hand, frequently pulling over to help those stranded on the side of the road or working during the holidays to make sure travelers could get home safely. He was very generous and truly loved his work. He was an avid reader who enjoyed traveling, visiting many countries including Italy, Panama, and Costa Rica. His favorite place when he wasn’t home was visiting family and friends in Melbourne, Australia. His family will miss him during Jeopardy, where he knew more answers than most of the contestants. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

George is survived by his wife of 35 years Cherie Jenkins, ,his son Thomas Jenkins and his girlfriend Nicole Phillips, his daughter Kelsey Mierzwa and her husband Joe, his four sisters: Irene Mosvold and (Rich Castrati), Mimi Picollelli and (Mike), Suzanne Hefton and (Harry) and Sally Liz Redgrave and (Owen), his aunt, Sister Mary Jenkins, in Melbourne, Australia, 15 nieces and nephews,16 great nieces and nephews, 3 Sister in-laws, his dog Maggie and his parrot Pretty, as well as numerous good friends and customers. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his uncles George Kaminski and Thomas Jenkins, his aunts Suzanne Kaminski, Pat Jenkins, and Sister Margaret Jenkins, his mother and father-in-law, Betty and Roger Elderkin and his faithful companion, Ivory.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to Dr. Robb, Dr. Das, Dr. Evans, Dr. Shah, Dr. Payne, and Dr. Prosseda, the staff at Aetna Emergency Ambulance Service, as well as the nursing staff at both Wilmington and Christiana Hospitals. Special thanks to the staff of the Cardiac ICU and Fresenius Kidney Care in the Main Street Shopping Center.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 1, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808 where a service will follow on Monday, January 2nd at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
