Schoenleber, Joan

Joan Schoenleber, age 87, of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, formerly of Wilmington, Delaware, died peacefully on November 4, 2022 at home with her husband of 63 years by her side.


Joan is the daughter of the late John (Jess) and Helen Olick Ballon. She graduated in 1952 from Throop High School in Pennsylvania and attended Lackawanna Business School. Born in Peckville Pennsylvania, Joan moved to New Jersey in her late teens and was employed at DuPont Photo Products in Parlin, New Jersey for 10 years where she met her husband, Walter Schoenleber. She left her job to become a full-time homemaker and mother. The family resided in Wilmington, Delaware for over 50 years before moving to Maris Grove in Glenn Mills, Pennsylvania.

Joan was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and a member of the Altar Guild. She volunteered in the Brandywine School District as a reading tutor for students with Dyslexia. Joan enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling and especially spending time with her two granddaughters.

Joan is survived by her beloved husband, Walter Schoenleber, her son Walter J. Schoenleber, and her daughter, Amy S. Gutowski as well as Walter’s wife Amy, her granddaughters Alexis and Nicole Gutowski as well as Joan’s sister, Ruth Applegate, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, John Ballon. A visitation will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 4900 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Delaware 19803 on Friday, November 11, at 11:00 AM followed by a service at 11:30 AM. Interment will take place privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made in to the Mary Campbell Center, 4641 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803, Attention: Children and Youth Program / Karen Depoulter.
