Marengo, Dorothy R.

Dorothy Ray Marengo, age 90, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Binghamton, NY, died February 27, 2022.

Dorothy earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Rochester and a master’s degree in guidance counseling from the University of Indiana. For many years Dorothy raised her four children and volunteered in her community with organizations such as PTA, Girl Scouts, the Trustee Council of the University of Rochester, and the vestry of St. David’s Episcopal Church. Her professional career was just as varied. She was the assistant dean of women at Randolph-Macon College, director of SANE of Delaware, a non-profit committed to the peaceful implementation of desegregation in Wilmington, and finished her career at the Historical Society of Delaware.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Ken Marengo, and sister Beverly Coope. She is survived by her children Susan Ruth Marengo, Cheryl Young (Jim), Doug Marengo (Cathy), and Bruce Marengo (Mary); 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother Herbert B. Ray; and Mercedes, an exchange student whom Dorothy viewed as a daughter.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 5 at 11 am at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 2320 Grubb Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810. The family will greet friends at a reception following the service in the church hall. Interment will follow the reception.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Dorothy’s name to St. David’s Episcopal Day School.
