Betty Jane (Long) Grzybowski (83) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Harold and Mildred (Lawrence) Long.
Janie, as she was affectionately called, was a graduate of P.S. duPont High School and the Goldey Beacom School of Business. After graduation she worked at Wilmington Trust Company where she met her beloved husband Edward with whom she enjoyed forty-seven years of marriage until his death in 2006. Janie later worked for twenty-one years at the Charles Bush School. After retirement she continued helping others as a volunteer at the Alfred I. duPont Nemours Hospital for children.
Surviving Janie to cherish her memory are two daughters, Lisa Callahan and her husband Paul and Susan McCullin and her husband Michael; also three grandchildren, Ashley C. Brown (Jeffrey), Michael McCullin (Amie), and Matthew McCullin (Lauren); and one great granddaughter Ava Jane Brown. Also surviving are brother Harold and sister-in-law Irene.
As a grandmother Janie was second to none. Always welcoming drop-in grandchildren, she could whip up a hearty meal or magically produce her signature Christmas cookies, or provide overnight accommodations. Her great granddaughter Ava will hear stories of her great grandmother, and she has to remind her one of the handknitted heart blankets that Janie had prepared years before the birth of grandchildren.
Loved by a group of friends from school, work, and neighborhood, she liked going out for breakfast or lunch. She also kept in touch by texting or talking on the phone, especially to a dear cousin Rhea Markwood.
