Katie Hewlett, 59, one of five daughters of Thomas E. “Bump” Smedley and Shirley McCafferty Smedley and a lifelong resident of Delaware, died on Wednesday, June 16 of complications from her battle with cancer.
Katie grew up in New Castle and graduated from William Penn High School. After attending Goldey Beacom College, she went to work at the DuPont Company and had a distinguished 36-year career there as a Senior Executive Administrative Assistant. Katie loved sports and was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan.
She is survived by her husband, David C. Hewlett; their two children, Christopher C. Hewlett and Amanda E. Bertelson and her husband, Ben Bertelson; their first grandson who is due at any moment; and four sisters: Elizabeth S. Murphy, Cynthia L. Simeone, Judith M. Mazur, and Jacqueline G. Toner; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway on Wednesday, June 23 from 6-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 809 S. Broom Street on Thursday, June 24 at 11am, followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery. Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Helen Graham Cancer Center, www.christianacare.org (please specify Helen Graham Cancer Center).
