Wilmington- Barbara K. McGinnis, age 93, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2021. She was born in Chicago, IL and was the daughter of the late Dorothy B. and Sidney A. Kent. Barbara attended Colorado College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
While raising her family she was a substitute teacher, then finished her career as the lower school librarian and a reading teacher at The Tatnall School for 22 years. In her retirement. Barbara volunteered at the former Concord Pike Branch and the Brandywine Branch of the New Castle County Library System and served as a Cub & Webelos Scout leader, Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the DuPont CC and St. David’s Episcopal Church where she was involved with the Women’s Group.
During the annual summer vacations, Barbara enjoyed fishing and hiking in Boulder Junction, WI. She also enjoyed bird watching, golfing and crafting framed dried flower creations and pine cone centerpieces. Her family was what brought her the most joy.
Her husband of 56 years, William Joseph, died in 2008. Barbara is survived by her two daughters, Jean McGinnis and Katherine Cavanaugh (Mark); 4 grandchildren, Casey (Kris), Kylie (Matt), Sheila (Maxx) and Robert, 4 great grandchildren, a sister, Polly (Jim) and several nieces and nephews. She is also preceded in death by her two sons, Jerry and Steven and a sister Dorothy.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 28, beginning at 10 am, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 2320 Grubb Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810, where a memorial service will follow at 11 am. Burial will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Services will be held in accordance with the current state and church health directives.
