Simon, John S. Jr.

John was born on August 12, 1931 to John Sebastian and Eleanor Thompson Simon in Wilmington, Delaware. He and his sister, Barbara, grew up along the Brandywine where John enjoyed the river and playing baseball, basketball and football. John graduated from Alexis I DuPont High School in 1950. Soon after graduating he served in the US Coast Guard and was stationed at both Woods Hole, MA and Cape May, NJ. After an honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, John returned to Wilmington. Employment with Bell Labs’ Nike Zeus Program took John to Burlington, NC where John met Catherine Simmons and the two married in August 1960. They welcomed their children Cathy and Craig in 1962. They moved to Wilmington, DE in 1964 where John took employment with BF Shaw Company as a draftsman and was an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church. After retirement, John worked part-time at the Brandywine YMCA. During this time in Wilmington, John welcomed his son-in-law, Douglas Marengo, into his family and later became “pop-pop” to Joshua (Bridget) Marengo of Glen Burnie, MD; Beth (Andrew) Logan of Pittsburgh, PA; Gerald (Shannon and their daughter Caroline) Marengo of Wilmington, NC; Daniel Marengo of Hummelstown, PA and Nathanael Marengo of Hummelstown, PA. John loved his family well and created memories with each of them. John and Catherine left Wilmington in 2010 to live closer to their family in Hummelstown where they became members of Hershey Presbyterian Church. John’s last six months were difficult and brought many changes. These changes brought many caring and loving people into his life from Penn State Health, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Ephrata Community Hospital, The Gardens at Stevens Nursing Center and the Maple Farm Nursing Center. In addition, the love and support of family and friends in Pennsylvania, Delaware, North Carolina, Kentucky and Texas and his church family at Hershey Presbyterian have long been a source of support, encouragement and help and greatly appreciated. John passed on to his Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 18 with Catherine, Cathy and Craig at his side.

A public graveside service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19805. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial gift to Hershey Presbyterian Church, 1521 Sand Hill Rd., Hummelstown, PA 17036.
