Yovino Jr., John

John Yovino Jr., 84, of Wilmington, died on February 13, 2021.

John was born on August 11, 1936 in New York, New York to John and Jean Yovino. He grew up in Woodside (Queens), New York. John graduated from Flushing High School in 1954, and subsequently attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute where he graduated with a chemical engineering degree. During his time in college, John participated in the Army ROTC and after graduation he served in the United States Army, remaining in the active Reserves until 1976. His final rank was Captain. John began his professional career in 1959 when he started working for Atlas Powder Company here in Delaware. He continued employment with them as the company morphed into Atlas Chemical Industries, and finally ICI. He retired in 1992 after working for them for 33 years.

John was a committed and loving, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He always enjoyed family gatherings and was known as the consummate carver of meat (having spent time working in his uncle’s butcher shop growing up), and cake cutter (inside family joke - always entertaining). John enjoyed woodworking, performing any type of home renovation (especially kitchens and bathrooms), and walking for exercise at the Concord Mall. He was frequently involved in community issues, and served as civic association president for his neighborhood multiple times.

John is survived by his wife Elizabeth B. Yovino (Chris to friends & family) of 58 years, his three sons: Robert, Matthew, and Peter, their families, and his sister JoAnn DeSantis.

A private service will be held at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home. A celebration of John’s life will be held in the Spring, or Summer. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to Christiana Care Health System, Office of Development, 4000 Nexus Drive, Suite W3-300, Wilmington, DE19803 (or online at giving.christianacare.org).
