Murphy, Robert

Robert “Bob” Murphy, age 84, of Cheswold died Sunday February 7, 2021 at the Center at Eden Hill in Dover.

Bob was raised in Elkton and attended Elkton High School where he played in the marching band, and was on the soccer team. Bob had a lifelong affinity for football, and loved the Dallas Cowboys. One of his biggest accomplishments was building a baseball field when he was with Chem Search Corporation and having it named “Murphy Park.” He served honorably in the Marine Corps, and was active in the West Jefferson (North Carolina) Volunteer Fire Company. Bob was a Christian Disciple of Christ, and was very active in the Church of the Nazarene in Smyrna. Bob loved gardening and his beloved dog Lucky.

Bob was predeceased by his wife Betty in March of 2019 and grandson Samuel Young. He is survived by his children, Debbie Shertz (Paul), Audrey O’Neill (John), Donna Weaver (Jeff), Denise Bond; sister Audrey Spence; thirteen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren; companion Mary Say; and other extended family members.

Due to COVID restrictions the funeral service will be private. A viewing will be offered to friends from 12-1 pm on Saturday, February 13 at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808. Masks are required and admittance may be regulated to conform with current state guidelines.
