Geralis, Lula

Lula Geralis, age 95, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 17, 1925 in Chester, PA., the first of three children to Antonios and Ekaterini Bahles. Her father emigrated from Agia Paraskevi, Mytilini, Greece and her mother from the island of Kefalonia. Lula, her given name in English, was a shortened form of her Greek name, Stavroula, a name which refers to the sign of the cross.

She was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Goldey-Beacom College.

Her passion was and will always be her family. Her home was always filled with the finest of her homemade meals, never without plenty extra for any extended family or friends that might drop by unexpectedly for a visit. All were welcome anytime. Her house reflected her love of life, always filled with the vibrant colors of her outside garden, her carefully nurtured African violets inside, and the boisterous sounds from all night poker games.

Though she was born in this country, she spoke, read, and wrote Greek like a native speaker. She was the embodiment of philotimo, (love/honor), an unconditional love for her children and a deep appreciation and admiration for her heritage and ancestors. She instilled this virtue in her children, an everlasting connection to their culture. She was an innate nurturer, always finding joy in helping others celebrate their own unique gifts, regardless of what others might have thought.

Lula was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Constantine, her father, Antonios Bahles, her mother, Ekaterini Kouroukli Bahles, her uncles, Gerasimos and John Kourouklis, Pete and Socrates Bahles, and her brother Nicholas Bahles. She is survived by her four children, Alexandra, Manuel, Antony, and Katina, her sister, Helyn and brother-in-law, Demo Carros, her three grandchildren, Nicholas, Stephanie, and Christina, her five great grandchildren, Chase, Mina, Jaxson, Alexus, and Naiya, her goddaughter, Katrin Sparico, and her godson, George Magiros.

A viewing will be held on July 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m., both at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom St., Wilmington, DE 19806 with the interment following the service at Silverbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in Lula Geralis’ name to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom St., Wilmington, DE 19806 or Bayada Hospice, 4250 Lancaster Pike, Suite 308, Wilmington, DE 19805.
