Griest, Vera Z.

Wilmington-On Sunday, February 14, 2021, Vera Z. Griest, age 90, died suddenly and peacefully surrounded by her family.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Vera was the daughter of the late Nikon and Mary Zabenko. Vera lived the majority of her life in Wilmington, DE. She retired after many years as the Supervisor of Transportation for Columbia Gas Systems, Corporate Headquarters. Vera was past President of Millcreek Fire Company Ladies Auxillary and a lifetime member. She was an avid reader, at times, reading a book a day. Vera loved the beach and spending time with her family. She was a fabulous cook and her “beach beans,” were enjoyed by all. Most of all, Vera devoted her life to her family.

Vera was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Blackwell, Helen Setzer and Virginia Huff; brother John Karp; daughter-in-law, Jackie Griest and Ronald Blum a former son-in-law. She is survived by her children, Jeri Whitney (Leon), David Griest, Bill Griest (Jinx), and Karen Blum (Chuck Sammons). She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, all of whom she adored.

A viewing will be held on February 23, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE, 19808 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Caste. Luncheon following at Millcreek Fire Company, Kirkwood Highway. Services will be held in accordance with the current health directives, wearing masks, social distancing and capacity requirements.
