Samuel Herbert Longacre, Jr., 91 of Hockessin, DE passed away on January 23, 2021.

Herbert is survived by his 2 children; Ellen M. Longacre and Samuel Longacre, III (Lisa); 3 step children; Kathleen Brawders, Eugene R. Deakyne Jr. (Joyce), Karen E. Hickman (David); 2 grandchildren, Brandi Leigh Gibson, Amanda Kaye Longacre; 6 step grandchildren, Brian Angus Coffin, Eugene R. Deakyne lll, Michael Deakyne, Olivia A. Suchanec, Julia Lites (Caleb), Alicia L. McCullough (Michael); 3 great grandchildren, Abigail Grace Gibson, Isla Jean Gibson, Gregory Eugene Gibson; 7 step great grandchildren, Luke Deakyne, Maya Suchanec, Emily Deakyne, Ava Deakyne, Madeline Deakyne, Payton Suchanec, and Savannah Lites.

Herbert was born in Camden, NJ on October 13, 1929 and was the son of the late Lillian Weisgerber and Samuel Herbert Longacre, Sr. He graduated from high school at P.S. Dupont High School, Wilmington, DE in 1947. From an early age he knew he wanted to work on small aircraft and get his private pilot’s license. He accepted a position at the New Castle County Airport as an aircraft mechanic. Herbert was then drafted by the Army during the Korean War and served as a paratrooper with the 101st Army Airborne stationed at Fort Campbell, KY. Upon release from the Army, he returned to work at the New Castle County Airport and retired after 44 years of service. He fulfilled his dream of flying when he obtained his single engine private pilot’s license in 1972. Above all else, he will be dearly remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather.

A service will be held on Thursday January 28 at 11am at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington 19808. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park. Masks are required and building capacity restrictions will be observed(40 people).
