Hopkins, James P.

Claymont- James P. Hopkins, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2021.

He was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late John and Margaret Hopkins, who immigrated from Ireland in 1917. He graduated from Southeast Catholic HS in 1946, where he was inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame. James also attended St. Norbert’s College, Wisconsin.

He spent his entire career in the chemical refinery industry. James retired in 1990 after 30 years at SunOlin Refinery. After retiring he enjoyed attending all his grandchildren’s sporting events. James also enjoyed Philly sports teams and traveling in the US, Europe and the Islands. He was a longtime member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. And in his later years he enjoyed his daily 5 o’clock Bourbon and pretzels.

James’ wife of 64 years, Margaret (Flanigan) died in 2013. He is survived by his children James P., Jr. (Cheryl), Robert P. (Jane), Msgr. John P., Timothy P. (Maureen), Margaret M. Gregg, Kevin P.(Colleen), Katie A. VanHeest (Robert), Patty A. Doogan (Sean), and Maribeth; 21 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 2 siblings, Margaret Collins and Nora McLaughlin. He is also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Deborah Hopkins; a son-in-law, Chris Gregg and 4 siblings.

There will be a viewing at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington on Wed., Jan. 27 from 6-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 on Thur., Jan. 28, at 11am, which will be live streamed. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery. Services will be held in accordance with the current health directives, wearing masks, social distancing and capacity requirements.
