Alexander Piragow, age 79, of Lewes, DE passed away on January 17, 2021 due to complications of COVID-19.
Alex immigrated to America with his family in December of 1953. He graduated from H. Fletcher Brown Vocational High School and worked in the Engineering Department at DuPont for 32 years. Alex was a member of the Delaware Saengerbund and Enzian Volkstanzgruppe. In his younger years, he was a Schuhplattler and performed and competed with his dance group from the Delaware Saengerbund around the country. Later, he was also a Vorplattler for many years leading his dance group on the floor. He enjoyed being in charge of the children’s dance group instructing them in traditional German dances. He also served as a judge for several dance competitions throughout North America. Alex made several trips to Germany to visit family and tour the country. He served in the Delaware National Guard. Alex was full of life, loved being at the beach and he especially loved fishing and crabbing. He was a member of the Elks Club and enjoyed playing cards at the Lewes Senior Center prior to the pandemic.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents Vasily and Helene Obertyschew. He is survived by his son Adam Piragow and daughter Janice Mullin; grandchildren Aydin Piragow, Joseph Mullin, Beverly Mullin, and Millisa Casper; 5 great grandchildren; sister Olga Maloney; brother-in-law John Maloney; niece Diane du Pont (Henry); nephew David Maloney (Dawn); and 4 great nieces and nephews.
Due to the coronavirus burial will be held privately. A celebration of his life will be planned at a future date.
