Joan passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2020. Born in Lykens, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of John A. Betz and Josephine C. Betz. She is survived by her loving sister, Josephine M. Betz; her first cousins Anne Marie Bohrman, Joseph O’Neill, and Eleanor McDuffie Powell (for whom she was Maid of Honor); many other cousins; and kind neighbors. She was predeceased by her brother, John A. Betz (“Jack”).
Joan was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lykens, Pennsylvania. She graduated salutatorian from St. Mary’s High School. Joan graduated valedictorian from Kutztown State Teacher College where she majored in Mathematics and received a degree in Secondary Education. Following graduation from Kutztown, she taught mathematics at Brandywine High School in Wilmington, Delaware, where she was the Chairperson of the Mathematics Department for many years. She also extended her education through courses at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Joan enjoyed traveling, her favorite city being Rome. Joan was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Church at Sharpley and is survived by members of her Renew Group. Some of Joan’s talents included playing the piano and cooking. She enjoyed reading books and attended the Lifelong Learning Academy in Wilmington where she studied painting.
Joan was buried in the family plot at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery located in Minersville, Pennsylvania.
