Nelson T. Ross, Bear, DE, peacefully passed away on January 12, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born on February 13, 1938 to the late Austin & Lelia Ross.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delphine Ross; sister, Agnes Brown; sister-in-law, Florence (Albin) Gregg; niece, Sherrill Mullenix; nephew, Scott Helms; great-nephew Shaun (Colleen) Mullenix; great-niece Jessica (Charles) Woodward; great-nephew Robert Helms; great-great-nieces, Ciara, Hailey and Audrey; and great-great nephew, Caleb.
He was raised in Newport where he graduated from Conrad High School in 1956 and played baseball and basketball. He then went on to attend the University of Delaware while serving in the Delaware National Guard.
Nelson retired from Morton Thiokol after more than 25 years as an illustrator. He then worked part-time at Strawbridge’s and loved to find the bargains for Shaun and Jessica. After that, he built a lawn service business that he managed for many years.
A lifetime member of Union United Methodist Church, he was their treasurer for many years and was instrumental in the building of the new church on School Bell Road. He was also a 32nd degree Mason with the Ionic Lodge No. 31 A.F. & A.M. 5+
An avid sports fan, you could always count on him to have some game on TV whether it was baseball, football, or basketball. He coached the Union softball team for many years and spent many nights watching UD women’s and men’s basketball games. He loved to share his enthusiasm for baseball with his nieces and nephews.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the service and burial will be private. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Union United Methodist Church, 345 School Bell Road, Bear, DE 19701, or Delaware Humane Society, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
