Laura Ann Gearhart passed away on November 19, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE.
Born in Scranton, PA to Judith Loftus and the late Duane Battenberg, Laura lived her life as a daughter, a mother, and a friend to all who crossed her path. To those who knew her, Laura was defined by her generous and selfless personality, her kindness and compassion for all people, and, above all, her strength.
In her career, Laura was proud to manage the Kirkwood Highway Speedway, but her life’s true passion was found in the kitchen. Nobody ever went hungry in Laura’s house, or, really, in Laura’s life. In her time, she fed countless neighbors, family members, coworkers, children, and complete strangers. Whether it was with trays upon trays of home-cooked meals, endless bags of snacks for her daughter’s entire colorguard team, or her popular “blood punch” stand on Halloween, if there was food to give, it was given. Everyone will miss Laura’s homemade meatballs, chicken tacos, shrimp scampi, crockpot pork chops, lasagna, and bountiful backyard cookouts.
When she wasn’t in the kitchen, Laura could be found cheering on her favorite football team, the New Orleans Saints (“WHO DAT!?”), finding deals at local yard sales, playing scrabble with people from around the world, watching her favorite reality shows, singing karaoke, vacationing at the beach, and loving her family. Not a day went by where she didn’t perform at least one random act of kindness. Laura lived by the motto “live well, laugh often, love much, and do good deeds daily.”
She is survived by her mother, Judith Loftus; her daughter, Katrina Manierre and her husband Matt; her brother, Craig Friese and his wife Diana; her step siblings William Battenberg and Kimberly Stout; her aunt, Sharon Beggs; her niece, Brittany Moyer; and many other loving family members.
A memorial service will be held on November 28, 2020 at 2pm at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808 where friends may call from 1:30-2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Food Bank of Delaware in her memory.
